A summer jobs program for young Detroiters exceeded its goal and will provide work experience for nearly 5,600 kids, Mayor Mike Duggan said today.

Grow Detroit’s Young Talent, a partnership between Duggan’s office, philanthropic groups, local businesses, City Connect and Detroit Employment Solutions Corp. had set a goal of providing summer jobs to 5,000 young people ages 14-24. Duggan challenged Detroit business leaders to participate in the program during a speech at the Detroit Regional Chamber’s Mackinac Policy Conference in 2014.

“As I’ve said many times, I believe that talent is equally distributed across this world, but what is not equally distributed is opportunity,” Duggan said at a news conference at Detroit Manufacturing Services on the city’s west side, which is providing jobs to 100 young people, the largest number of any company in the program. “We have an enormous number of talented young people who have not had the same kinds of opportunities as people in other communities.” (Detroit Free Press, 6/25/2015)
