DETROIT – Today, UNITE HERE Local 24 endorsed Mike Duggan for re-election as Mayor of the City of Detroit.
“On behalf of the thousands of hospitality workers we represent across the city of Detroit, we are proud to stand with Mayor Duggan,” said Nia Winston, president of UNITE HERE Local 24. “Our members work hard to make Detroit a place where people live and visit, and we appreciate the hard work Mayor Duggan has done to turn this city around. The city is growing, our union is growing, and Mayor Duggan is leading the way. Thanks to his dedication and determination, all of Detroit is moving forward.”
UNITE HERE Local 24 represents thousands of Detroit hospitality workers. Its members work at casinos, clubs, restaurants, hotels, and stadiums throughout Detroit.
“I want to thank UNITE HERE Local 24 for its support, and for all their members do to make Detroit a better place to live, work and visit,” said Mayor Duggan. “I look forward to continuing to work with the men and women of UNITE HERE to build Detroit’s future together.”
UNITE HERE Local 24 joins a wave of support from Detroit grassroots and civic leaders for Mayor Duggan. Earlier this week, legendary Congressman John Conyers, Jr. endorsed Mayor Duggan, highlighting improved city services across the city since his election.
Unions representing thousands of Detroit workers collectively have also joined UNITE HERE Local 24 in endorsing Mayor Duggan, like Michigan’s largest skills trade union, the Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters and Millwrights and Detroit’s top public safety unions, which represent Detroit police and fire fighters.
At Mayor Duggan’s re-election announcement in early February, Wayne County Executive Warren Evans, Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon, and Detroit Branch NAACP president Wendell Anthony all spoke out as strong supporters of Mayor Duggan’s re-election campaign, too.
