DETROIT – Today, the Metro Detroit AFL-CIO endorsed Mike Duggan for re-election as Mayor of the City of Detroit.
”We are pleased to give our endorsement to Mayor Mike Duggan,” said Rick Blocker, president of the Metro Detroit AFL-CIO. “We have more than 100,000 members and over 40 affiliates throughout Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties. Mayor Duggan is the best candidate running who will fight for working families and help move the labor movement forward.”
The Metro Detroit AFL-CIO is the Detroit area’s largest coalition of local labor unions. Its endorsement of Mayor Duggan joins recent labor endorsements by the Greater Detroit Building and Construction Trades Council, UNITE HERE Local 24, the Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters and Millwrights, the Detroit Police Officers Association, Detroit Police and Sergeants Association, and the Detroit Fire Fighters Association. Collectively, these unions represent thousands of Detroit voters.
“Mayor Duggan never stops fighting for Detroit workers and Detroit jobs,” said Fred Westbrook, president of the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 26. “I saw his commitment to Detroit working families firsthand when we reached a collective bargaining agreement for the DDOT bus drivers I represent in 2015, our first agreement since 2010. Our drivers now have the potential to share in DDOT’s growth as our city’s buses run on time and as new 24-hour and express routes are added.”
“Mayor Duggan is creating opportunities and jobs for Detroit’s young people,” said David Hecker, president of the American Federation of Teachers – Michigan. “The Mayor’s Grow Detroit’s Young Talent summer jobs program has given thousands of Detroit kids opportunities to see themselves in careers they may have never imagined. His commitment to Detroit kids doesn’t end there, with the Detroit Promise scholarship making college attainable for every high school graduate across the city. We’re proud to support Mayor Duggan for re-election.”
“I want to thank the men and women of the Metro Detroit AFL-CIO for their endorsement,” said Mayor Duggan. “As we work to build one city for everyone, I’ll never stop fighting to bring good jobs and opportunities to every Detroiter, in every neighborhood.”
